Background of the Study
Presidential addresses in Nigeria are pivotal in conveying policy, national vision, and cultural values to the public. Semantic integration—the coherent interconnection of ideas and terms within a speech—is essential for ensuring that the intended message is clearly communicated (Okeke, 2023). This study investigates the semantic integration in Nigerian presidential addresses by analyzing the lexical choices, thematic coherence, and rhetorical strategies employed by leaders during public speeches. The research examines how presidents blend formal and colloquial language to appeal to diverse audiences, and how they incorporate symbolic references that resonate with national identity. By analyzing a corpus of presidential speeches from recent administrations, the study seeks to identify recurring patterns and assess the effectiveness of semantic integration in influencing public opinion and fostering national unity (Afolabi, 2024). The study also considers the impact of media presentation and audience feedback on semantic coherence, contributing to a deeper understanding of the role of language in political communication (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the crucial role of presidential addresses in shaping public discourse, there is limited research on the semantic integration of these speeches. Inconsistencies in lexical cohesion and thematic continuity may lead to ambiguous messages and reduced impact (Okeke, 2023). This gap is particularly concerning given the importance of clear communication in political leadership. The lack of systematic analysis of semantic strategies in presidential speeches hampers efforts to refine political rhetoric and improve public understanding (Afolabi, 2024). This study aims to fill these gaps by providing a detailed examination of semantic integration in Nigerian presidential addresses, thereby offering insights for enhancing the effectiveness of political communication (Ibrahim, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the semantic integration in Nigerian presidential addresses.
To assess the impact of lexical and thematic cohesion on message clarity.
To propose recommendations for improving semantic integration in political speeches.
Research Questions:
What strategies are used to achieve semantic integration in presidential addresses?
How do these strategies affect public perception?
What improvements can enhance the clarity and impact of presidential speeches?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of semantic integration in Nigerian presidential addresses, offering valuable insights into effective political communication. The findings will assist political leaders, communication experts, and educators in refining language strategies to foster national unity and clear public discourse (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to analyzing presidential addresses from recent Nigerian administrations and does not include other forms of political communication.
Definitions of Terms:
Semantic Integration: The coherent linking of ideas and meanings in a text.
Presidential Addresses: Formal speeches delivered by the president.
Rhetorical Strategies: Techniques used to persuade or inform audiences.
